TOP CAFÉS IN BADEN-BADEN
If coffee is considered black gold, then there’s been a gold rush in Baden-Baden. Dozens of cafés are to be explored around this amazing spa town. They are surprisingly different from casual café’s in common tourist destinations. Elaborate grand rooms and stunning decor make you feel like you are travelling back to the good old days. Companies adjusting their business ethics have also stepped in, with some carefully sourced beans and a roasting process done in-house. These are six of the best, according to our humble opinion here at WAWW.
1. Kaffeesack: Coffee Connoisseurs
This place is a labour of love and a tribute to true café culture. It’s tiny but mighty, with a menu that serves an incredible variety of in-house roasted beans and blends. Kaffeesack takes both the quality of coffee and principles of fair trade extremely seriously. The coffee roaster can tell you charming stories about every little farm in India, Columbia and Guatemala that sells beans to Kaffeesack. Desserts are made from local ingredients of the highest quality. Kaffeesack is simple, unpretentious and extraordinarily good.

2. Café König: Cake Heaven
With a name like this (König means “king” in German), is it any wonder that this extremely Instagrammable coffee house wears the crown of being the most famous café in Baden-Baden? Well, it’s definitely the prettiest. In fact, it is a café, a confectionery, an ice-cream parlour and a restaurant, all in one. Its terrace is perfect for people-watching, its elaborately decorated room presents an enchanting setting for afternoon tea and its display of cakes and pastries are a show-stopping culinary masterpiece. First-time visitors must try the café’s renowned Black Forest cake and pick up some chocolate truffles to take away. Café König offers all-day dining, so drop by even if you don’t have a sweet tooth. They say if you haven’t been to Café König, you haven’t been to Baden-Baden. True that!

3. The Wintergarten: Blooming Marvellous
If you are in the mood for something classy look no further than The Wintergarten at the five-star Brenners Park-Hotel. It’s one of the best places in Baden-Baden to have luxurious blends of tea as well as the most delicious coffee. Afternoon tea is served from 2 pm to 6 pm and includes delicate teas from different corners of the tea-growing map. Served with a combination of British and French favourites: scones with clotted cream and jam, traditional sandwiches with cucumber, ham and smoked salmon and, of course, chocolate muffins and petit fours. The setting, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the most beautiful private garden is just as stunning. Baden-Baden is one of the most sun-drenched cities in Germany, so when summer arrives, the outside terrace becomes a wonderful pit stop for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. Sitting in the beautiful garden right next to the soothing Oos-River is a treat by itself, for sure.

4. Roomers: Hip and Cosy
Roomers hotel’s hip and relaxed atmosphere is the perfect place to enjoy a frothy cappuccino or punchy espresso. The hotel’s lounge has walls decorated with big scale art pieces and shelves filled with heavy books on art and photography. It’s a trendy place to come and meet up with friends, to flick through glossy books, to hold hands on a romantic date or to just sit back on a comfy sofa and unwind to pleasant music. If you like your coffee with a view, then head to the roof terrace and enjoy the postcard beauty of Baden-Baden.

5. Trinkhalle Cafe: A Cultural Destination
Located at the rear of the Kurhaus and sitting right next to the infamous Casino, Trinkhalle’s classy café is the perfect chill out spot. Inside, it’s filled with classical paintings and beautiful flower arrangements and outside it turns into a perfect patio to have a breather when sightseeing takes its toll. You can choose from a selection of teas, coffees and cakes, or go all in and have a light meal with some crisp local wine. The prices are reasonable too and service is attentive and fast.

6. Café Capri: People Watching
As its name suggests, Café Capri serves Italian coffee, but that’s not what it’s famous for. In fact, it’s loved for many things: the location that allows you to see the hustle and bustle of Baden-Baden’s central square, an incredible menu with over 20 varieties of fresh baked cakes and homemade ice creams. Established in the sixties, for decades, Cafe Capri has been faithfully served as a strategic spot for people watching and gossiping. The activity doesn’t stop when temperatures drop. Nowadays, you can get yourself wrapped in a faux fur blanket, position yourself outside under a heater and watch the world go by while having a cone of seductive ColleGelato ice cream and sundae (vegan, gluten-free or lactose-free, if you must) or a rich sacher-cake. It’s a new world, but good old habits don’t need to die!
