Located just off the quaint town of Perast is the most popular of Montenegrin attractions, a church and museum sitting on a man-made island in the middle of the UNESCO protected Boka Bay. The history of both the church and the town is something that will definitely keep you enthralled.

2. Sveti Stefan

This insanely beautiful village just on the outskirts of Budva has tiny cobblestone alleyways and gorgeous beaches that overlook the iconic luxury resort on Sveti Stefan island. Spend a day there – eat, sunbath and explore.

3. Old Town Kotor

This old town has fortifications built during the Venetian period, dotted with churches and museums telling its own stories. There are some wonderful little shops dotting the cobblestoned alleyways which have some wonderful locally made knickknacks which make the most perfect gifts.

A visit to the Ostrog monastery puts you in front of what is said to be one of the three most visited Christian tourist destinations on the planet, believe it or not! The site is of course highly regarded within Montenegro itself, not least as it’s carved directly into a mountainside. Today, it’s a place of religious, cultural and historical interest with awe-inspiring views.

The largest lake in the Balkans with more than 270 different bird species. It’s incredibly gorgeous with a small island dotting the lake and local, traditional, fishing villages along the lush shoreline. Go on a tour of the lake and you may be lucky enough to be offered a treat of priganice (a popular fried dough snack) and perhaps some homemade rakija (traditional fruit spirit), while being told all about the wonders of this enormous beauty.

This attraction in the town of Tivat is an oasis of untouched nature. It provides a shelter for some exceptionally rare bird species, including that of the flamingo and cormorant. The stunning reserve is a great place to cycle through with the entire family.

Durmitor has 18 glacial lakes and at an altitude of 1,500m and above. Is it any wonder why these lakes have been nicknamed the “eyes of the mountain”? Also, you can buy some wild berries and mushrooms, from the locals, who pick them from the park, which are simply divine!

The ancient splendour, Biogradska Gora National Park, is home to one of the last rainforests of Europe, the untouched forest is filled with trees, some are older than 500 years.

Slicing through the spectacular mountains in the north of Montenegro is the Tara River Canyon, the deepest and arguably the most beautiful canyon in Europe. A sight that one must see not only for its sheer beauty, but why not go ziplining over it, or river rafting down the river below? There are some wonderful excursions to be done in and around the Tara River Canyon.

A tiny island about 300m long and 200m wide, in the middle of the Boka Bay. It seems as though it’s stuck in a time capsule, only 100 people live here and mostly in bungalows. The island has a rich history and a small monastery dedicated to Archangel Michael, built in the early 13th century.

Just off the Lustica Peninsula, a short boat ride away from Porto Montenegro, is one of the most spectacular caves. Gaining its name from the iridescent blue that is reflected – the enchanting blue cave is a sight to see! For those more adventurous types, once there you can opt for a kayak and snorkelling trip to explore the labyrinth of caves both above and below the water.

This has got to be one of the most stunning old towns in Montenegro, we recommend getting a guide to explore this historic town that must have been a metropolis several hundred years ago. There are some lovely little restaurants to try, just before you reach the old town walls – perfect for a beer or an ice-cold drink, before walking through the city ruins.

This is one of the most popular National Parks in Montenegro that’s between Kotor, Tivat, Cetinje and Budva, making it an easy trip from anywhere on the coast. If you go via the serpentine road through Kotor it could very easily be the most beautiful drive you will ever do. Visit Petar Petrovic Njego’s Mausoleum, go hiking, ziplining and why not have a picnic and make it a perfect day out.

Known as the Royal Capital of Montenegro, this small city is drenched in culture and history at every corner. While in Montenegro, definitely try to see the Monastery of Cetinje, where two great Christian relics are treasured: the hand of Saint John the Baptist and a piece of the Holy Cross.

16. Lipa Caves

Discover a little piece of the mysteries of the underworld and explore 2.5km of the Lipa Caves. On a clear summer’s day, this incredible cave has the distinct smell of limes (which is ‘lipa’ in Montengrin) wafting in the air. A small tip: when going, whether or not it’s a hot day out, take a jacket as the caves reach around 10 degrees celsius – nature’s aircon!

Budva is definitely a hub of some great nightlife in Montenegro. VIP guests include Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Skrillex and Lenny Kravitz. During summer, parties start on the beach in the morning and never really end, they simply move to another location.

18. Ada Bojana

Ada Bojana is essentially a nature reserve with a great beach that is partly given over to nudists. There’s even a hotel where clothing is optional. Unless you’re keen on kicking off your kit, it’s best to stick to the swimsuit-friendly zone. It’s a great beach for horseback riding or enjoy a long and lazy lunch at a restaurant along the Bojana River and feed the ducks.

Now for those that think that Montenegro is just a summer destination, you are wrong. Kolasin is a wonderful destination in the winter months too for skiing. Visit a spa over the cooler months, imagine winter sitting by a divine fire, having delicious Montenegrin hot chocolate. 

Podgorica

In the capital Podgorica, there are a couple of good malls not to miss. Take a trip to the theatre, watch some up and coming musicians in a pub and try some of their wide selection of international cuisine.
